Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that the club will be able to utilise the services of Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera when they entertain Derby County in the League Cup third round on Tuesday night.
Herrera, 28, has been absent since the 2-0 Premier League win over Burnley with an ankle injury but speaking ahead of the Derby game, Mourinho has revealed that the Spaniard will be in contention to make the matchday squad.
Aside from this, the Portuguese tactician highlighted that Marcos Rojo may have to wait longer to return to first-team action after the Argentine sustained a recurrence of his knee problem during the recent United Under 23s game versus Reading.
Manchester United have endured a rather unsatisfactory start to the season which has already witnessed them suffer a couple of league defeats and the draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers over the weekend sees them eight points behind leaders Liverpool after just six matches into the campaign.
As a result, there has been a sense of unhappiness which has loomed around Old Trafford and Mourinho would certainly want to overcome this situation by guiding his team to just a second home win in four matches across all competitions.
Looking into the team news, both Diogo Dalot (fitness) and Nemanja Matic (one-match suspension) are expected to play some role in the League Cup tie after having failed to make the matchday squad for the recent stalemate against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Apart from the duo, goalkeeper Sergio Romero could be another who may receive gametime after playing deputy to David de Gea during the opening weeks but United can expect to be without one first-team regular through a ban.
Marcus Rashford has been serving a three-match domestic suspension after his reckless red card against Burnley this month and the visit of Frank Lampard’s side happens to be the final match where he remains restricted from making the team.
