Spanish goalkeeper close to penning new Manchester United deal

Spain international David de Gea is reportedly close to committing his long-term future to Manchester United after witnessing the club’s fortunes change under interim head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 28-year-old snubbed a renewal with the Red Devils earlier in the campaign and this witnessed them trigger the extension clause available to prolong his deal until the end of the 2019/2020 season.

However, according to The Sun, the shot-stopper now appears to have changed his stance after witnessing the upheaval in league form at United since Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho at the helm.

It is added that the Spaniard is convinced that the club can compete for trophies once more after the recent progress and he could be prepared to sign a fresh bumper deal worth £400,000-a-week including bonuses.

United were lingering 11 points behind the top-four positions at one stage of the season and this urged the club to part ways with Mourinho, who had developed a mixed relationship with the first-team squad.

Since then, there has been a strong transformation in terms of the performances with Paul Pogba, who was sidelined during the final weeks under Mourinho, making a key difference on the playing field.

Owing to this, United have propelled to within six points off the final Champions League qualification spot and they have the change to close the gap even further when they entertain Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.

A victory for United would ensure a seventh successive win under the caretaker boss while they could reduce the deficit to the top four, should Chelsea drop points on their visit to Arsenal on Saturday evening.

Shortly after the Brighton game, Ole’s team have a fourth-round FA Cup tie against the Gunners on the road and the game should offer a sterner test of their credentials, given their rivals excel in their home patch.
