Chile international Alexis Sanchez has been making the headlines over the past few months with Arsenal struggling to agree terms over a fresh contract. The 28-year-old currently has just a year left on his existing deal, and talks over an extension don’t seem coming although Arsene Wenger has stressed the desire to keep hold of his attacker. With 30 goals across all competitions last season, Sanchez made himself a strong favourite among the Gunners’ faithful, but the urge to play Champions League football appears to have turned his head. Calcio Insider today looks into two clubs who could potentially persuade Arsenal to do business for Sanchez this month.
Manchester City: Sanchez enjoyed a fruitful relationship with Pep Guardiola during his time at Barcelona, and the pair are hoping to be reunited at the Etihad Stadium. Arsenal have previously sanctioned the sale of Ashley Cole, Samir Nasri and Robin van Persie to direct league rivals, but the club could block a similar approach this summer as they do not want to dent their title ambitions. Cole, Nasri and Van Persie all clinched Premier League titles away from Arsenal, and the club’s hierarchy would prefer avoiding such instance with Sanchez.
Paris Saint-Germain: The French giants recently sealed the world-record signing of Neymar for a staggering £198m, but this is unlikely to stop them from extending their spending spree. Sanchez has been on Les Parisiens’ shortlist for a while, and it would not be surprising if they lodge a late attempt for his signature. The Capital outfit have fallen in the quarter-final stage of the Champions League in four of the last five seasons, and Sanchez could provide the added boost to push them towards the European crown.
One thing is for sure, the Gunners will not offload their leading performer on the cheap, and whoever comes forward for his services, will have to pay a substantial sum in order to test their resolve.
