Mesut Ozil eyeing potential reunion with Jose Mourinho

Germany international Mesut Ozil is rumoured to be eyeing a potential reunion with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United. The 28-year-old’s contract at Arsenal is due to expire at the end of the season, and talks over an extension haven’t been held since February.

According to SportBild h/t The Sun, the Gunners are at risk of losing their attacker on a free transfer after he snubbed a contract offer earlier in the year. The uncertainty of manager Arsene Wenger’s future is said to have played a key role in the player’s decision, and the club are still to restart talks with the World Cup winner.

Ozil enjoyed a fond time with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, and it is reported that there could be a reunion on the cards with the Special One seemingly keen on the German midfielder. Other than United, Barcelona

Other than United, Barcelona are understood to have failed with an approach for Ozil during the summer transfer window, and they could potentially revive their interest in nine months’ time.

The Gunners talisman has not enjoyed much success since the start of the season, and his performances against the likes of Stoke City and Liverpool have led to severe criticism from former players as well as pundits.

Ozil has the tendency to struggle in games away from home, and this is something which has not improved over the years, although he remains successful with the German national side.

Both Alexis Sanchez and Ozil have entered the final year of their contracts at the Emirates, and it is a huge possibility that the Gunners will part ways with the influential pairing whilst making a financial loss next summer.

The winter transfer window will provide the option of offloading the duo on cut-price deals, but Arsene Wenger is unlikely to pursue multiple replacements midway through the Premier League campaign.
