Manchester United appear to have unfinished business in the transfer market with Jose Mourinho plotting a surprise move with Willian. The Special One was responsible for bringing the Brazil international at Chelsea in 2013, and the pair enjoyed a fruitful relationship until the Portuguese’s sacking in the 2015-16 season.
Since then, the duo have kept close contact with each other with Willian suggesting earlier this summer that the Blues knock back a tentative enquiry from the Mancunian giants. According to The Sun, Mourinho appears to have revived his interest in the 29-year-old as he look to add a new wideman who can operate from the right-hand side.
Mourinho has previously suggested that he would like to deploy wing-backs in his formation, and Willian could potentially succeed in the right wing-back role with his relative experience at Stamford Bridge. Juan Mata has occupied the right side of the attack since the start of the campaign, but his left-footedness has brought some restrictions to his style of play.
With the transfer window closing in just a few hours, the Blues would unlikely want to lose another key player to United unless they have a couple of replacements in hand. Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez has been touted as a potential target, but he is, for now, angling towards a move to Barcelona.
The departure of Nemanja Matic from Stamford Bridge has already led to severe criticism from the Blues’ hierarchy, and it is predicted that they would not make a similar mistake whilst dealing with United’s approach for Willian.
As per The Sun, the Mancunian giants have lodged a last-ditch £35m bid for the former Anzhi Makhachkala, but the deal could depend on the Blues’ deadline day business – with Conte already angered by the club’s failure to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fernando Llorente.
