Arsenal boss drops tentative update on Aaron Ramsey’s contract situation

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has dropped a tentative update on the contract situation of Aaron Ramsey during Friday’s press conference. The Wales international has started the season in a relatively good fashion with a couple of assists already in his bag but their remains a concern over his long-term future with his existing deal expire at the end of the current season.

Speaking in the press conference ahead of the Watford game, Unai was asked about the importance of Ramsey to the Gunners to which he highlighted that he values the quality of each and every player within the first-team squad.

When quizzed further regarding the reason behind Ramsey’s contract standoff, the Spaniard appeared to drop a rather vague answer which included a note on the player’s position under his representative, the club and other players within the squad.

Based on this, we cannot make any guesses as to which direction the contract talks could be ending but a recent report from The Mirror‘s John Cross has suggested that the negotiations have broken down for good between the Welshman and the club’s hierarchy.

Should this end up being the case, Ramsey would be free to discuss a pre-contract with a foreign club when the transfer window reopens at the turn of the year and the club may also mull over the prospect of selling him, if they want to cut down on their losses.

The north London giants found themselves in a similar position with three players in Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere last winter and on that occasion, they decided to part ways with the former after Manchester United offered Henrikh Mkhitaryan in a straight-exchange deal.

Ozil, on the other hand, went on to sign a new long-term contract on club-record wages but they could not sort out an extension for long-standing midfielder Wilshere, who left on a free transfer after not being assured of regular gametime under Emery this term.
