2018 World Cup XI – Team of the tournament

The biggest show on earth finally reached its conclusion as France deservedly won their second World Cup title after beating Croatia 4-2 in the final.

The tournament in Russia produced many top performers and after discussions, team Calcio Insider have come up with the team of the tournament.

Here is our World Cup XI.

There were many quality performances but Belgian international Courtois was arguably the best shot stopper in the tournament and he gets our vote.

Kieran Trippier is the only English player that makes it into the XI. He was a major attacking threat from the wing-back position and also proved to be effective in the defensive third. The Spurs star provided an assist in the group stages and scored an amazing free kick goal in the semis.

Uruguay did not concede a single goal in the group stages and a lot of credit for that goes to their defensive leader Godin. On the other hand Varane and Hernandez were brilliant in the defense for France in the competition.

Chelsea star N’Golo Kante was easily the best defensive midfielder in the tournament. He was rock solid in front of the back four and was most notably responsible for stopping the creative brilliance of De Bruyne in the semi final.

Croatian international Luka Modric won the Golden Ball as the best player in the tournament and our XI cannot be complete without him in the central midfield.

As far as the advanced midfield role is concerned, two players in the form of De Bruyne and Coutinho were mainly considered and the Brazilian international got the nod from our side.

The former Liverpool star was the Selecao’s best player in the competition. He scored the opening goals for Brazil in the games against Switzerland and Costa Rica. Moreover, he provided a brilliant pass in the team’s opening goal vs Serbia. He also got an assist against Belgium in the quarter final.

Kylian Mbappe became the second teenager to score in the final of the World Cup, he got the Silver Ball and deserves to be in the team on the right wing.

On the left wing, Hazard and Perisic were brilliant and we have selected the Croatian international, who scored a goal and set up the winner in the semi final and also scored a fantastic goal in the final as well. Hazard scored two vs Tunisia in the group stages but did not find the net in the KO rounds and scored his last goal of the tournament vs England in the third place play-off.

Kane won the Golden Boot after scoring 6 goals in the competition but he scored 5 goals against the likes of Tunisia and Panama in the group stages. So, we have selected Griezmann, who netted 3 goals and provided 3 assists in the KO stages of the competition. He was involved in three goals in the World Cup final.
