Three Things We Learned: Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Manchester United

Tottenham Hotspur preserved their five-match unbeaten home run versus Manchester United as they clinched a comfortable 2-0 victory in the Premier League on Wednesday night. Christian Eriksen popped up with the opener after just 11 seconds on the clock, and an own goal from Phil Jones in the 28th minute summed up United’s average performance on the night.

Three Things We Learned:

Spurs’ Champions League hunt: The north London outfit started the day with a five point behind Liverpool, but they have now been offered an added incentive with Chelsea’s damaging home defeat to Bournemouth. The Premier League holders succumbed to a 3-0 loss to the Cherries, and Spurs are now just two points adrift of both the Blues and Reds with just 13 matches left. Next up, they have a tricky test at Anfield, and they may find themselves in the top-four with a surprise victory against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Manchester United still vulnerable at the back: United came into the game with five clean sheets in as many outings in 2018, but their game plan was thrown out of the basket within records. The Red Devils had several jittery moments throughout the match, and Phil Jones, in particular, had a game to forget after his reluctance to use his left foot cost his side an own goal. David de Gea also had one of his rare bad days on the field as he nearly gifted a third goal for Spurs in the first period.

Manchester United out of title race: The 12-point gap to leaders Manchester City looked a huge mountain to climb for United, and their latest defeat has probably ended any glimmer of securing the title. The loss was United’s fourth of the top-flight campaign, and Jose Mourinho may have to switch his attention towards the FA Cup in order to garner some silverware this term.
