The Need For Regulation

2022 is nearly at an end and it’s been an interesting one for the gambling industry. There are many reasons to be optimistic about the future, but in some countries, there are causes for concern.

Those in the gambling industry are wary of the R-word. It stands for Regulation and can cause many problems for gambling companies. It’s not a case of authorities wanting to bully the industry, they know how valuable they can be.

New York has made it legal to bet on sports, particularly online. Here is a list of legal NY sportsbooks to check out. Doing so has created a business where in New York, a billion dollars a month can be wagered. This in turn leads to millions of dollars of tax revenue going into the state coffers. All very handy indeed as the cost of living increases.

However, there is always the knowledge that gambling can cause severe problems. It needs to be controlled and regulated. That’s why a regulated gambling industry is so important. There is still the underground unregulated industry and that is a dangerous place indeed.

Those using it aren’t going to receive the protection that is seen in the regulated industry. There’s no licensing body to pursue your case when problems arise. These sites won’t show concern if their customers are gambling far too much. Nor will they always have promotions that are as good as they sound.

The problem with regulation is that sometimes it can be too strict. That’s the situation that gambling companies in countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain are facing. The past year or so has seen plenty of added restrictions being made.

These include areas such as advertising of gambling products. The number of adverts of this nature has greatly increased in recent years. Seeing all the offers enticing potential customers has become worrying for authorities. They have clamped down on when they can be shown and further restrictions are likely in 2023.

The sponsorship of sports clubs by gambling companies is also a target for the regulators. Critics feel that this allows the companies yet more opportunities to attract new customers. The fear is that those under the legal age to gamble will see the sponsorship and the next generation of bettors will be born.

In the UK, 2022 ends with uncertainty for the gambling industry. As in other countries, it has had some tough times in recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic saw land-based betting shops, casinos, and bingo clubs temporarily closed. This led to an increase in the amount of online gambling taking place.

All the land-based venues are open again but there are still problems for the UK gambling industry. In 2019, the Conservatives promised to reform the 2005 Gambling Act. That is necessary as the legislation doesn’t cover online betting as it simply wasn’t around at the time.

While the government continually delays legislation, the UK Gambling Commission is becoming far stricter. Millions of pounds of fines have been levied on gambling companies in areas such as social responsibility and money laundering.

As is being seen in many countries, governments need to do something about online betting which they see as easily accessible.  Whether it be more affordability checks, reducing stakes on slot games or banning sponsorship and restricting advertising, there are problems ahead for the gambling industry,
