Real Madrid keen on signing Chelsea star this summer

European champions Real Madrid are plotting a surprise attempt to re-sign Alvaro Morata from Chelsea at the end of the season. The Spain international has been earmarked as a contingency option, should Los Blancos fail in their attempt to lure Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich during the summer.

Morata, 25, had a good introduction to English football as he notched 12 goals before the turn of the year. However, he has since struggled to find his feet due to injuries, fitness, loss of form as well as discipline, and this has seen him add only two more goals to his tally – which have come in recent games against Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

According to The Express, the Blues’ record signing could be offered a return to the Spanish La Liga during the summer with ex-club Real Madrid looking into a replacement for Karim Benzema, who has underperformed through the season.

Los Blancos are said to have identified Lewandowski as their prime target to reinforce the position, but Morata remains a back-up plan, should German champions Bayern be reluctant to part ways with the Poland international.

If such a situation occurs, Morata could possibly return to the Bernabeu for a third spell. Morata first graduated through Los Blancos’ academy to make 52 appearances for the first-team before joining Juventus in the summer of 2014.

Two years later, the Capital outfit decided to re-sign him from the Bianconeri via a buy-back clause, and he scored 20 goals in 43 appearances in the 2016/17 season before sealing his club-record switch to Chelsea prior to the current season.

It is perhaps too early to come to a judgement over Morata’s future, and his position at Chelsea may be defined by whoever manages at the helm during the off-season. Blues boss Antonio Conte has a contract until 2019, but his role is very much under question with the club appearing likely to finish outside the top four.
