Tottenham were interested in signing Andre Gomes from Barcelona last year but the player eventually stayed with the Catalan giants.

If the latest reports in the media are anything to go by then Pochettino is favorite to sign the Portuguese international from the Spanish champions.

Yesterday, Mundo Deportivo came up with story in which they talked about the departure of Gomes and mentioned (right below the headline) ‘Tottenham wins’. In the middle of the article, the Spanish source stated that the player is likely going to join Spurs this summer.

The outlet also pointed towards an article covered on July 14, in which they claimed that the former Valencia man is confident of securing Spurs move.

Gomes’ current situation:

When he joined Barca, Enrique preferred the likes of Iniesta, Rakitic and Busquets in his midfield. When Valverde took over, he preferred the trio as well and also signed the likes of Paulinho and Coutinho last season.

In such a situation, Gomes had to warm the bench. Now that Iniesta and Paulinho are gone, we can expect Coutinho, Rakitic and Busquets to start regularly and Barca also have Rafinha and Sergi Roberto as other midfield options. Therefore, the Euro 2016 winner should leave this summer to play week in week out.

Tottenham’s midfield:

Spurs have midfielders like Wanyama, Dier, Winks and Dembele in their midfield but the Belgian international’s future is unclear and if he departs then Gomes could be a quality signing to replace him. Like Dembele, the ex Benfica man can also play in the defensive and the attacking midfield roles

His current market value:

The La Liga player has got a clause of €100m (FCB) in his contract but earlier this month, Mundo Deportivo reported that Barca are prepared to let him leave for €35m.
