Tottenham Hotspur have been the quietest club in the Premier League this summer after having yet to open their chequebooks to make a significant signing. The north London giants recently sanctioned the £50m sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City, but this has not intensified their pursuit for new signings with Mauricio Pochettino comfortable with most of the options at hand. Calcio Insider looks into two positions, Spurs could possibly strengthen between now and the end of the transfer window.
Right-back: With the departure of Walker, the club are likely to be hugely dependent on Kieran Trippier, who inked a fresh five-year deal earlier in the week. The one-time England international played second fiddle to Walker for the most of last season before the poor form of the latter tempted Pochettino into a change. Trippier ended the previous campaign as the first-choice at right wing-back, and this eventually spelled curtains to Walker’s career in north London. Porto’s Ricardo Pereira is currently the top option to fulfil the backup role, but the deal is still far from being finalised.
Centre-forward: The rise of Harry Kane has been well documented over the past few seasons. The 23-year-old bagged the Premier League Golden Boot with 29 strikes last term despite spending a month or so on the sidelines. Spurs managed to utilise Heung-min Son to negate the injury absence of Kane, but the club still require a world-class striker, who could take the club towards a Premier League title. Netherlands’ Vincent Janssen barely impressed in his debut campaign with Spurs, and he is already being linked with a summer exit. As of now, no striker targets have been listed but Pochettino will have one eye on recruiting a standout prospect.
Spurs’ hierarchy are currently concentrating on the development of their new stadium due to open next summer, but this is unlikely to have an impact on their transfer spending with the vast sums being generated through the Premier League TV revenue.
