Opinion: Three Players who could leave Real Madrid this summer

European champions Real Madrid have been rather quiet in the transfer market this summer. After their La Liga and Champions League double last season, the club look settled with their options in hand, and they may have to offload some of their fringe players in order to push through a ‘Galactico’ signing. Calcio Insider looks into three such players, who could end their association with the Capital outfit in the transfer window.

Alvaro Morata: Morata to Manchester United or Chelsea has been the talk in the media over the past couple of weeks. The Spaniard is clear on pursuing a fresh challenge this summer, and it appears that the Premier League could be his preferred destination next season. The Champions League winner was initially tipped to make his move to Old Trafford, but it now seems Chelsea have the advantage after the former opted to sign Romelu Lukaku from Everton instead. Morata faced a hugely frustrating spell last season as he was often found playing second fiddle to Karim Benzema for the striker’s job.

James Rodriguez: Rodriguez is another player who has been on the fringes of the first-team. The Colombia international has not quite convinced Zinedine Zidane of his talents, and this was evident after Isco was prepared ahead of him during Gareth Bale’s injury absence. The former Monaco man was also dropped out of the matchday squad for the Champions League final, and this has surely put curtains on his Los Blancos career. Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United have been associated with the attacker, but the Colombian is said to favour a move to the latter to work alongside Jose Mourinho.

Mateo Kovacic: Like the above-mentioned duo, Kovacic earned just 19 starts in La Liga last season as he often found himself behind the likes of Casemiro and Luka Modric in the pecking order. Real Madrid will have the services of Marcos Llorente following his loan return from Alaves, and he could be the perfect deputy, should Kovacic decided to move on. The Premier League has become the prime destination for any player wanting out, and Tottenham Hotspur appear keen on his services.
