Arsenal attacker Mesut Ozil is reportedly prepared to run down the final months of his contract in order to join Manchester United in the summer. The Germany international has yet to respond to the Gunners over a potential extension, and it appears that he will leave the Emirates on a free transfer in June 2018.

According to The Mirror, the World Cup winner is angling towards a move to Old Trafford next summer where he could be reunited with Jose Mourinho. It is added that the player’s entourage have already made contact with United’s hierarchy and the signs are encouraging over a future switch.

Ozil had played under Mourinho’s guidance for three years at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, and the pair have since spoken fondly about each other despite switching to different clubs.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger took a huge risk to allow Ozil to enter the final year of his existing deal, and he is now likely to stick with the attacker until the end of the season as a winter deal would disrupt the makeup of his squad.

Alexis Sanchez is another who is in a similar position as Ozil, and it could be a potential double blow for the north London giants next summer unless they go on to win the Premier League title against the odds.

A runner-up finish in the 2015/16 season has been the Gunners’ best result since their Championship-winning campaign in 2003/04, and they have a stiff task on their hands this term with the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea in prime touch.

Mesut Ozil missed the goalless London derby against Chelsea last weekend with a minor knee problem, but he is expected to return to the starting lineup with the Gunners host West Bromwich Albion in Monday night’s Premier League game.
