Manchester United face the risk of losing Spaniard amid fresh Real Madrid interest

Manchester United could be bracing themselves for a fresh approach from Real Madrid to acquire the signature of goalkeeper David de Gea in the summer transfer window.

The Spain international has been with the Red Devils for the past eight-and-a-half years and during this period, he has kept 100 clean sheets in the Premier League alone while attaining hero status among the club faithful.

Despite this, his long-term future remains under question with his contract expiring in 15 months’ time and according to The Mirror, Los Blancos may seek to capitalise on the situation in the summer.

The Champions League holders only signed Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea during last summer’s transfer window and it appeared that the Belgian’s arrival would end any interest in De Gea.

However, the Belgian has not been entirely impressive under the guidance of both Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari with just eight La Liga shutouts and this has presented doubts with Zinedine Zidane back at the helm.

As per The Mirror, Zidane is not entirely convinced that Courtois is the right man to slot between the sticks for the long-term and this may revive the club’s long-term interest in De Gea.

The publication adds that Los Blancos could be willing to part with as much as £75m as they seek to lure the former Atletico graduate to his hometown during the forthcoming transfer window.

At present, United are discussing a £350,000-a-week contract with De Gea’s representative Jorge Mendes but so far, there has been no indication over an extension beyond June 2020.

A separate report from The Telegraph last month suggested that De Gea is eyeing at least double of his current £240,000-a-week wages, and that could be the reason halting the contract extension.

David de Gea is currently on international duty with the Spain national team. He is likely to start in their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Norway and Malta respectively this month.
