Man Utd & Chelsea inquire about €70m Bundesliga midfielder

Manchester United and Chelsea have already strengthened their midfield departments by signing two quality players this summer.

The Red Devils have lured Brazilian international Fred from Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk. On the other hand, the Blues have secured Italian international Jorginho from Serie A club Napoli.

As per reports, the two clubs want to further reinforce their midfield departments and according to ESPN, they have inquired about Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara.

Alcantara’s last season:

The former Barcelona star had an injury hit campaign last term and he could only start 12 times in the Bundesliga for the German giants. Overall, in all competitions, he made 32 appearances (22 starts), scored 7 goals and provided 4 assists.

At the 2018 World Cup, he featured for 20 minutes against Portugal in the opening fixture and played 74 minutes vs Morocco in the final group game. Spain were knocked out on penalties in the Round of 16 by Russia and Alcantara did not even feature in that contest.

His playing position:

The 27-year-old star is a versatile talent, who can play in multiple midfield positions. Naturally, he is a creative central midfielder but he can also be deployed in the central attacking midfield role if needed.

At United, he will be able to play Champions League football and will compete with the likes of Fred and Pogba in the midfield.

However, if he moves to Chelsea then he will have to play Europa League next season. The likes of Jorginho and Kante will likely start and therefore, Alcantara will have to compete with his compatriot Cesc Fabregas for the final midfield spot in Sarri’s preferred 4-3-3 setup.

His contract and market price:

Alcantara’s current deal with the Bavarians will expire in 2021 and as per renowned Spanish source Sport, his market price is around €70m.
