Injury Update: Belgium international sidelined until April after knee surgery

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini is expected to spend the best part of two months on the sidelines after undergoing a surgery on a recurring knee problem. The Belgium international returned to first-team action with the Red Devils last month, but his comeback was short-lived as he suffered another injury setback.

Fellaini was brought on as a substitute during United’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in midweek, but unfortunately his participation was restricted to just seven minutes after he sustained a recurrence of the knee injury, which has hampered him since October.

Jose Mourinho’s side returned to winning ways on Saturday via a 2-0 triumph over Huddersfield, and shortly after the game, the manager confirmed (Sky Sports) that the midfielder could be out until the end of March in order to recover from the operation.

Fellaini’s injury was a cause of concern for Mourinho early on in the campaign, but the Portuguese now appears in a rather satisfactory state with young midfielder Scott McTominay managing to fill in the boots whilst also competing for a regular run in the Premier League.

The young midfielder was a surprise starter ahead of Paul Pogba in the recent Premier League win over the Terriers, and his emergence appears to have done a whole world of good for United, who have regularly found themselves short of a healthy midfield setup.

Fellaini is likely to return to the United first-team to play a part in the final months of the campaign, but it is yet to be seen whether the Belgian will put pen-to-paper on a fresh long-term contract with the club beyond the summer.

The 30-year-old has already snubbed an initial contract offer from the Red Devils, but the club have still offered him an improved deal with the hope that he will prolong his stay. Fellaini has amassed four goals across all competitions for Manchester United this term.
