Gianluigi Donnarumma agrees new AC Milan contract

Italy international Gianluigi Donnarumma has agreed to a new five-year deal with AC Milan after having snubbed interest from Paris Saint-Germain. The 18-year-old will earn an annual wage of £5m thus making him the third most expensive goalkeeper after Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich) and David de Gea (Manchester United).

Donnarumma had initially snubbed the chance to extend contractual terms at Milan, and this spread anger among the fans, who targeted him on social media. However, the player appears to have overcome the reaction with Sky Sport Italia citing that he will remain at San Siro until 2022.

The move comes about following the impending interest from Paris Saint-Germain, who were prepared to offer him a bumper wage package. Unai Emery’s side had placed a £11.5m annual sum on the table, but his love for the Rossoneri urged him to extend his contract.

Donnarumma has, however, added two release clauses into his contract which would be dependent on the club’s progress in Europe. The teenager would be available for a sum of £88m next summer, should Milan qualify for the Champions League, but this value could be halved (£44m) with the failure to achieve a top-four league finish.

Agent Mino Raiola had hoped to persuade Donnarumma to join Real Madrid this summer with the promise of making him the leading shot-stopper. But his plans of earning a big paycheck were scuppered after manager Vincenzo Montella managed to convince Donnarumma to stay with the influence of his father.

One of the key reasons behind Donnarumma’s extension would be the exciting project at AC Milan which has seen as many as six players recruited this summer. The club have signed the likes of Mateo Musacchio, Franck Kessie, Ricardo Rodriguez, Andre Silva, Fabio Borino and most recently Hakan Calhanoglu for a combined sum exceeding £85m.
