Confederations Cup Preview: Germany vs Chile

World Cup holders Germany face off against Copa America champions Chile in the final of the Confederations Cup. Joachim Loew’s side have looked comfortable on the playing field despite playing a very much inexperienced squad in the tournament. On the other hand, Chile have lacked the goal threat up front despite possessing the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas, who have good scoring records for the nation. Germany beat Mexico by a convincing 4-1 scoreline in the semi-final stage in order to progress to the final of the tournament. The result was sort of a surprise of the Mexico faithful as they felt their team had the experience to turn the German side over. Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka started the goalscoring for Germany with a brace early in the first half, while goals from Timo Werner and Amin Younes sealed the deal for Die Mannschaft. Mexico did manage to net a wonder goal from Marco Fabian in between the two German scorers in the second period.

Meanwhile, Chile struggled to find the breakthrough for the entire 120 minutes against Portugal in the other semi-final, though both Arturo Vidal and Martin Rodriguez hit the woodwork. Eventually, it was left to goalkeeper Claudio Bravo to save the day as he managed to keep out all three penalties from Portugal in order to guarantee his side’s progress to the final. Alexis Sanchez and Vidal remain fundamental towards the nation’s quest for their third international title in three years. Chile looked dominant against Germany during the early exchanges in their group stage game, but Germany only grew as the match went on thus settling for a 1-1 draw. Chile will come with a much better intent than their previous encounter and the young Germans could expect a tough final, where they will have to overcome some early South American pressure.
