Champions League [Preview]: Manchester United vs Basel

Manchester United will face off against Basel in the Champions League opener on Tuesday night. The Red Devils have been in solid form in the Premier League with three victories and a draw in the opening four games, and this sees them atop of the standings. Basel, on the other hand, have had an indifferent start to the new campaign in Switzerland, and they have already lost the same number of games (2) as last season. Raphael Wicky’s side are placed third in the Swiss Super League.

The last meeting at Old Trafford ended in a 3-3 draw between the clubs with Ashley Young netting the equaliser in injury time. However, United faced one of their most disappointing European results in the reverse fixture as they succumbed to a 3-2 defeat at St. Jakob-Park.

Players to watch for:

Romelu Lukaku – Manchester United: 

The Belgium international has notched five goals in as many games for United this term, and he could seek to extend this streak against the Swiss champions. Lukaku has stated his desire to play for a Champions League club in the past, and he now has the platform to shine, whilst leading the line for the Mancunian giants.

Ricky van Wolfswinkel – Basel:

The two-time Netherlands international has already amassed seven goals this season, and he remains the main threat up front for the Swiss giants. The 28-year-old failed to click during his time with English club Norwich City, but he has settled brilliantly with Basel following his 23-goal season with Vitesse last term.

Prediction:

Basel have gone winless in their past nine outings in Europe (three draws and six defeats), and they could expect a tough trip to Old Trafford where a star-studded United squad await. Jose Mourinho is likely to rotate his options with Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling definite starters in defence, but they should have too much quality for Basel.
