Arsenal put contract talks with Sanchez and Ozil on hold

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that they are yet to reach an agreement with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil over the new contracts, and the discussion has been put on hold until the end of the season.

Arsenal are enduring a disappointing season so far, and it could get worse in the summer with two of their biggest stars’ future at the club hanging in the balance. Both Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil have less than 15 months left on their current contracts, and the duo has been linked with a move away from the club in the summer.

In an interview with beIN Sports, Arsene Wenger has revealed that the contract negotiations with Sanchez and Ozil have come to a standstill at the moment, and the club are waiting for the season to end before discussing further.

“At the moment we have not got an agreement.

“We have decided to focus on the end of the season and talk about it in the summer, it is the same situation with Ozil because once you don’t find an agreement and it [the negotiation] lasts, it is not good so it is better you get it out and sit down in the summer,” Arsene Wenger was quoted as saying by beIN Sports.

Sanchez, who had joined the London-based club from Barcelona in the summer of 2014, has been visibly frustrated with his team’s below-par performances in the league and in the Champions League this season. The 28-year-old is yet to commit his future to the club, and a host of European clubs are keeping a close eye on him at the moment.

On the other hand, Mesut Ozil had hinted in January that his future at the Emirates is linked with that of Arsene Wenger according to Skysports. The Frenchman’s contract with the club expires in the summer, and he is yet to sign an extension. Wenger had recently revealed to Skysports, after the 3-1 defeat against West Bromwich Albion in the league, that he has already made up his mind regarding his future at Arsenal and will make the official announcement soon.

Wenger has come under a lot of criticism from the fans this season, and the Frenchman has defended his position as the manager. Wenger has told beIN Sports that he understands that the fans are “very demanding”, but he is proud of how he has guided the club during a difficult financial period with “very, very, very limited resources”. However, if Arsenal fail to retain Sanchez and Ozil in the summer, the knives will once again be out for the Frenchman.
