Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has taken a step towards a summer exit after having finalised personal terms with Napoli. The Poland international has been plying his trade with AS Roma on loan over the past two seasons after having fallen below the pecking order at the north London club.
Italian outlet Il Mattino suggests that the 27-year-old could end his association with the FA Cup holders this summer with a view to linking up with Napoli on a permanent basis.
The player’s representatives are deemed to have already finalised a three-year contract with the Naples outfit, and all is left, is for the Gunners to accept a suitable package for his sale.
Szczesny’s decision could come as a major surprise for the Gunners faithful as many believed that he could act as a suitable competitor to Petr Cech with David Ospina seemingly on his way to Fenerbahce.
The Pole currently has just about a year left on his Gunners contract, and any decision on his future could be dependent on whether or not he accepts a new deal with the Emirates outfit.
Szczesny, who last featured for Arsenal in the FA Cup final win over Aston Villa in 2015, lost the number one role in January (same year) after he spotted smoking following a dismal 2-0 loss at the hands of Southampton.
He had therein played second fiddle for the season after which he was shipped out to the Giallorossi on a two-year loan contract which is due to expire at the end of this month.
Szczesny kept 14 clean sheets (Squawka) during the recently concluded Serie A season for AS Roma, and this appears to have captured the attention of Napoli, who are looking for a potential replacement to Pepe Reina.
Reina is apparently trying to quit the Naples club after president Aurelio di Laurentiis appeared to make fun of his spouse during the end of the season bash.
