Arsenal boss drops update on transfer plans before Thursday’s deadline

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has suggested that the club could pursue two players before the transfer window slams shut on Thursday. The north London side have already been hampered this term with season-ending injuries to Rob Holding, Hector Bellerin and Danny Welbeck and this has linked them with a number of players to reinforce the squad.

However, there has been no transfer activity over the past four weeks, though Emery has highlighted that could change before the transfer window closes. In a press conference covered by Sky Sports, the Spanish tactician has confirmed that the Gunners are seeking two players to strengthen different positions on the field but he refused to let out the names of possible targets.

The backline has been the prime area of concern for the Gunners this term with the central defence, in particular, being hampered by the long-term injury to Holding, while Laurent Koscielny and Sokratis Papastathopoulos have recently joined him on the sidelines with short-term setbacks.

Despite this, the manager has regularly highlighted that he has options within the squad including Stephan Lichtsteiner, Nacho Monreal and Granit Xhaka to perform the makeshift duties and it appears that the Gunners transfer business may not necessarily strengthen the department.

The Gunners are currently said to hold interest in signing Denis Suarez and Ivan Perisic before the transfer deadline approaches on Thursday. Among the duo, the former seems certain to join with Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde personally admitting that the deal is on the brink of completion.

The north Londoners are set to pursue Suarez on an initial loan move with the obligation to buy when the campaign concludes. The Gunners are understood to want Perisic in a similar kind of deal, though Inter Milan remain reluctant to agree for the moment.
