Arsenal have reportedly begun formal negotiations with KAS Eupen over the possibility of signing Henry Onyekuru during the summer transfer window.
The 19-year-old striker has made a huge impression for the Belgian minnows this term after having notched 20 points in the Jupiler League, and this has previously attracted interest from Everton and Southampton.
According to Sky Sports News, the Gunners have stepped up their pursuit of the young Nigerian with the club in desperate need of reinforcements in the forward department.
Both Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud have earned ample opportunities in the second half of the season, but there is still the need for a consistent goalscorer with neither making a lasting performance.
Meanwhile, Alexis Sanchez is still in a contract standoff with the Gunners with his contract due to expire in 2018, and he could be shipped out to a foreign club this summer rather than losing him for nothing in a year’s time.
Onyekuru has managed to amass an impressive tally of 20 goals for Eupen, who finished in the bottom half of their league, and this shows the immense potential the player possesses at such a tender age.
Nwankwu Kanu and Jay-Jay Okocha have been among the big headline makers from Nigeria over the past two decades, and a step up to the Premier League could have Onyekuru recognised by the national side ahead of a potential World Cup challenge next year.
The teenager currently has a meagre release clause of just £6.8m on his contract, and this puts the Gunners in a reasonable position to agree to a deal without having the pressure of expectation behind the signing.
Arsenal finished their Premier League season in fifth place following a 3-1 victory versus Everton over the weekend. With the Europa League coming along next term, the Gunners will most probably require additional recruits as Thursday night football normally has its wearing effect on the league form.
