Tottenham returned to the Champions League this season after finishing third in the Barclays Premier League last season. However, Mauricio Pochettino’s team failed miserably in Europe’s elite tournament and were demoted to the Europa League.

To make matters worse, the North Londoners were also ousted from the Europa League last week and are now focusing on finishing in the top four.

Tottenham comprehensively defeated Stoke City thanks to Harry Kane’s superb hat-trick on Sunday and are now ten points behind runaway leaders Chelsea.

Spurs do have a top squad but they still need more strength in depth to become a major force in the continent. The former Southampton boss needs big name signings next summer for the club to progress.

In addition to that, Pochettino must make sure that he keeps his star players at the club. Stars like Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris have already signed new deals to stay with Spurs for the long term. Fortunately, there is more good news for the supporters.

Daily Mail have reported that Belgian star Toby Alderweireld is close to sealing a new five year contract with the club that will pocket him around £75,000-a-week.

The ex Ajax star is one of the best central defenders in the Premier League. Spurs had the best defense in the league last season. Moreover, they have the best defense this season as well and Toby has been significant.

In his 18 league appearances in the current season, Tottennham have been able to keep clean sheets in 10 games. He has scored one goal this season and that came in Spurs’ opening UEFA Champions League fixture against Ligue 1 side AS Monaco.

Daily Mail claim that Toby’s current deal has a release clause of £25million pounds and without doubt he is worth way more than that. The new deal is being offered to him to get rid of the mentioned release clause.

Back in September 2016, vital players like Danny Rose, Christain Eriksen and Dele Alli signed new deals with the North London club. Securing Toby Alderweireld on a long term contract will be another key achievement. Tottenham’s future surely looks bright.
