Opinion: Two possible destinations for Julian Draxler this winter

Germany international Julian Draxler has been the focus of attention in recent weeks amid his limited gametime with Paris Saint-Germain in the current campaign. The World Cup winner only linked up with the French giants at the turn of the year, but his future has still come into question with summer recruits Neymar and Kylian Mbappe being the preferred picks on either side of Edinson Cavani. With the transfer window reopening in just over a month’s time, we look into two potential destinations for Draxler.

Arsenal: The north London have not missed being linked with Draxler since the summer of 2013. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is a key admirer of the former Schalke 04 man, and it is deemed that the FA Cup holders have made tentative enquiries to his representative previously. Both Alexis Sanchez, and Mesut Ozil will be entering the final six months of their respective deals in January, and Draxler could be an ideal replacement for either. Draxler has already shown his versatility for Germany playing on the left-wing or false nine position, and he is a player who can come close to Sanchez in terms of work-rate.

Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp’s side had approached Draxler prior to his switch to Paris Saint-Germain back in January. The Merseysiders are presently blessed with one of the Premier League’s best attack with the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho all capable of putting in standout performances. Despite this, there is a sense of uncertainty in the future of the latter (Coutinho), who tried to push through a move to Barcelona last summer. With Barca still predictably on the hunt for Coutinho, Draxler could be an ideal asset for Klopp, who likes to work on the counter-attack. Draxler has a keen eye for goal in such situations, and he could seamlessly fit the Reds’ style of play.
